Beware of Bogus HMRC Emails
11th February, 2010
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning after a succession of bogus emails were reported in the run-up to the self-assessment tax returns deadline on 31 January 2010.
The fake e-mails tell people to apply for tax refunds by filling in an online form that asks for personal bank account and credit card details.
A similar scam reported in 2009 used a fake HMRC site hosted in Denmark.
Please be aware that in this circumstance, HMRC never use telephones, emails or external companies and will only ever contact individuals who are due a tax refund in writing by post.
Please contact your Account Manager at Morgan Harris immediately if you think that you have received a bogus email or suspect that you have been a victim of a scam.
HMRC ask that if you receive a copy of the email then please forward it on to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.
For more information please visit HMRC's website or alternatively you can contact your Account Manager on 01993700010.
